Thoughts on Snow
- Lyrics from Camelot the musical
I think King Arthur had it right. There should be sense and sensibility to weather. I am not sure how people in warmer climates do it. How do they get on without snow for Christmas? There is nothing more “in the spirit” of Christmas than seeing snow fall. I don’t think I would like to be anywhere snowless for the holidays. Yet, after living in MN for 13 years, I know that snow can get out of hand. There should never be snow for spring break. So, what if a person could choose what winter would like? What would you choose.
I know what I would choose. I think it should snow the evening of Thanksgiving day. It should be light and romantic so that people don’t have to be stranded at their in-laws house. It signifies the coming of the winter season. It is the white blanket of awareness saying, “get ready for a winter of white beauty.”
Then, I think it should snow at least 5-7 inches a week until Christmas. This will keep the snow “playable” and allow for all the melted snow to be replenished. It should not snow until the kids are at school. However, I would like to have a few white-outs to give the people a good snow day. There is nothing better than a snow day. In fact, I would schedule at least 3 secret snow days. They need to be secret so people don’t plan for them. That is the point of a snow day.
After Christmas it will only need to snow 2-3 inches a week to get the black, gross snow back to looking good again. There will be no snow on the first Sunday of February because it is not fun to watch a snowy Super Bowl, or to make everyone take off their shoes in your house because they are covered in slush.
Lastly, the snow will have to be completed by Valentines day. In fact, Valentines Day (although Karla and I don’t celebrate it) should be the warmest day of the year thus far. That will allow for romantic walks, and for people to crack out of the hibernating shell they are in. And then winter is over until next Thanksgiving day.
As I sit in Caribou Coffee, I think to myself “I would be a great weather king.” Perhaps Obama will make that appointment today.
