Speaking at Cornerstone Church

An Armchair’s View of the World
In December I got a chance to speak at Cornerstone Church in Ames. I had about a week’s notice to prep (during Christmas week), so I pulled out an old message. It’s the first time it was videotaped, though.
As I recently stated in a sermon I gave at Westwind Church, I have no Facebook standards. Which means I do not scrutinize who I let into my Facebook world. That being said, I am up to 490 people on Facebook that call me “friend”. I am not exactly sure about all the people, I am more interested in the number of people. I am hoping that this week will allow me to have 500 friends.
When you decide to have no standards, unlike my wife who only uses it to keep in contact with her small group who are now in college, it is interesting who becomes your friend. Pockets of people from the past come to the service. Old friends, friends of my parents, and even the President of the EFCA now are connected to me through Facebook. I find this to be a trip. I have thought about grouping people into decades or areas of interest, but I find that to be too exhausting. Instead I will just group everyone together into one big friendship pot.
If I get to 500 this week, I’ll let you know. I find Facebook to be a hilarious social game (thanks to Jake Bouma). In fact, last week I dumped 10 people from Facebook to recieve a free Whopper from Burger King and there we some who were offended. As if I was actually choosing a burger over their friendship. So if someone is dumped on Facebook they feel dumped in real life. That confuses and intrigues me.
Anyway, I look forward to that 500th friend. In my head I envision it as Seth Green!
A few people asked me to repost this. Again, I would like to give huge props to Matt Johnson and Dustin Burggraaf for all their hard work. I hope this brings a little Christmas joy to your hearts!
This is short and sweet. I saw the new bond and it was awesome. I love the new post-modern James Bond. He gets beat up, screws up, feels pain, sorrow and an assortment of negative feelings. He is what the next generation of Bond lovers will need. I highly recommend. PLUS, James Bond goes green.
I willingly admit that I am a James Bond 007 fan. I have been since I can remember. I have all kinds of opinions on who is the best, and what villain I love the most, but this post is about ways that James has taught me to live my life. I think you will find that he is not only the world’s modern day savior (please don’t read too much into that), but also a teacher of life lessons. Here are some of the lessons that Britain’s top agent has taught me.
Thanks James Bond, teacher of life…oh yeah, and paid killer. I have learned much from you.
Not sure if you saw John McCain on David Letterman last night, what with the Red Sox coming back from a 7 run deficit, but it was very interesting. I felt Dave was pretty attacking of McCain, and John stood up under it. I am going to go back and look for the Obama interview so I don’t make statements that are biased. However, I don’t think any candidate can win when every media outlet, even entertainment television is against him.
McCain showed humor and humility to admit that he messed up. Something I would like to see from Obama. He showed the sense of humor he had, and was able to bounce back and forth from issues to Dave’s digging humor.
I have been watching David Letterman since I was in 9th Grade (1985). I was there with the velcro wall, Alka-seltzer suit, and the destruction through gravity. I believe that last night was a little too much of his hand showing his dislike toward the Republican agenda. It will be nice to know, though, that Dave will be paying more taxes under Obama’s tax plan since Dave makes $31 million a year.
Because of the massive response to my FRINGE post (3 people, which is 300% more than any posts I have written in the last year), I decided to list my Tivo Top Ten shows for the fall season. Mind you, I do not have expanded cable which limits the shows I watch. This is not Letterman-esc, so I will start with one.
There are some more shows on the way that will probably bump some of these off, but for now, this is my TV week, which Tivo whittles down to 2/3 of the time.
If you haven’t started watching it yet, FRINGE should definitely be put on your Tivo record list. It has everything that is needed to make a great show (mystery, story line, and great characters). I would say it is X-files, meets 24, meets Lost. JJ Abrams does it again (maker of Lost).
I would watch just to see John Noble (you may know him from Lord of the Rings). He is an incredible actor, moving from humor to insanity effortlessly. You can watch an episode online, and I suggest you do that.
